Hatha Yoga
Hatha Yoga is also known as hatha vidya or the “Science of Hatha” Yoga. The word Hatha comes from combining the two Sanskrit terms “ha” meaning sun and “tha” meaning moon. The word “ha” refers to the solar nadi (pingala) in the subtle body and “tha” the lunar channel (ida). However, when the two components of the word are placed together, “hatha” means “forceful”, implying that powerful work must be done to purify the body. Hatha Yoga is meant to join together our sun (masculine, active) energy with our moon (feminine, receptive) energy, thus producing balance and greater power in an individual.
Hatha represents opposing energies: hot and cold (fire and water), male and female, positive and negative. Hatha Yoga attempts to balance mind and body via physical postures or “asanas”, purification practices, controlled breathing, and the calming of the mind through relaxation and meditation. Asanas teach poise, balance & strength and are practiced to improve the physical health of the mind and the body.
An important part of Hatha practices is awakening of Kundalini. After completing this course the student attains Sliminess of the body, Cheerful Face, hearing of mystical sound, brightness in the eyes, sense of wellbeing, control over the bindu, increase in gastric fire and purification of the nadis.
Raja Yoga
Raja means royal or kingly. Raja Yoga meditation is generally based on directing one’s life force to bring the mind and emotions into balance that the attention may be easily focused on the object of meditation.
Generally, life force is directed to move up and down the spine until it is balanced and the mind and emotions are serenely content. Then awareness is generally directed to move forward into a point in the centre of the lower forehead. This meditation point, which is about half an inch above where the eyebrows meet, is called ajna, or the third eye.
When the energy is balanced throughout the brain and body and is easily moving forward in the area of the third eye, your mind becomes very calm. While your mind is not passive, it is free of meaningless thoughts, worries, and the bric-a-brac of the subconscious mind. This state usually gives you a very pleasant sense of well being and your mind seems filled with a velvety darkness.
As our consciousness continues to move in your third eye, pastel colours begins to appear in your forehead. Sumptuous, glorious pink, yellow, white, blue, indigo, green, and purple take their turn or play in combination in your forehead. Then, you may think you are seeing fireflies, lightning, or moonlight as your life force becomes more concentrated and more actively prepares you to behold higher consciousness. This process is making you ready to experience your true nature as pure consciousness, pure spirit and pure awareness. And then the light in your forehead blazes brighter than the sun! You find it is soothing to look into the awesome light and soothing to behold it. This is the brilliance of your inner light, your essence, revealing itself to you.
Raja Yoga, particularly, requires a teacher because it is easy to strain yourself, and it is also easy to delude yourself into high level hallucinations rather than actual experience of your higher consciousness.
However, the genuine Raja Yogi lives in bliss, with his or her will surrendered to God. A Raja Yogi realizes the profound truth of the Biblical passage: If therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be filled with light.
Karma Yoga
Karma Yoga is consecration of all actions and their fruits unto the Lord. Karma Yoga is performance of actions dwelling in union with the Divine, removing attachment and remaining balanced ever in success and failure.
Karma Yoga is selfless service unto humanity. Karma Yoga is the Yoga of action which purifies the heart and prepares the Antahkarana (the heart and the mind) for the reception of Divine Light or attainment of Knowledge of the Self. The practice of Karma Yoga prepares the aspirant for the reception of knowledge of the Self. It makes him a proper Adhikari (aspirant). He feels no strain or burden in discharge of his works. He is quite at ease. The heavy load which he felt previously on account of false notion has vanished out of sight now.
Kundalini Yoga
Kundalini Yogais sometimes called “the yoga of awareness” because it awakens the “Kundalini” which is the unlimited potential that already exists within every human being. When this infinite potential energy is raised in the body it stimulates the higher centres, giving the individual enhanced intuition and mental clarity and creative potential.
The Kundalini Yoga consists of a number of bodily postures, expressive movements, utterances, cultivation of character, breathing patterns, degrees of concentration, cross-legged positions, the positioning of the spine (usually straight), different methods to control the breath, closed eyes, and mental focus (often on the sound of the breath).
Like a few other Yogas, Kundalini Yoga links movement with breath. It is differentiated by a direct focus on moving energy through the Chakra System, stimulating the energy in the Lower Chakras and moving it to the Higher Chakras. Kundalini Yoga is intended to awaken the energy that resides in the spine by activating the nerve channels that are intertwined there.
Thanthra Yoga
The word THANTHRA literally means “expansion.” Thanthra Yoga concentrates on expanding all levels of the students’ consciousness to unveil and realize the Supreme Reality. Thanthra focuses on the dynamic aspect of divinity called Shakti, or “the Cosmic Mother.” The Thanthric devotee strives to attune with the spiritual dynamic energy in order to transform personal limitations and releases subconscious blockages.
True Thanthra Yoga is a pure path, Thanthra Yoga is concerned with the creative force and transmuting this energy into higher channels. The goal of Thanthra Yoga is to awaken and harmonize the male and female aspects within each person in order to spiritually awaken and realize the whole universe as an expression of the Cosmic Mother, the divine life force, or Spirit.
Swara Yoga
The word SWARA in Sanskrit means sound or musical note; it also means the continuous flow of air through one nostril. & we all know that YOGA means union. So Swara Yoga is the science which is about the realization of cosmic consciousness, through the awareness or observation, then control or manipulation of the flow of breath in the nostrils. Swara Yoga is an ancient tantric science which involves the systematic study of the breath flow through the nostrils [or Swara] in relation to the prevailing phases of the moon, time of day & direction.
Through the knowledge of Swara Yoga one can become free from all kinds of negative influences of one’s destiny & can achieve heightened awareness. The Swara Yoga practices related to breath were used understand the governing forces of life, to understand the nature of the universe & effects of the elements on body & mind by observing the different patterns of breath. Further, it was used to go beyond the limitations of the mind.
The fascinating thing about Swara Yoga is that just by being aware of the Swara [Dominant Nostril] in relation to the environment, you can manipulate the results of what you are about to do. In other words, you can find out which is going to be the successful route & then follow it.
